After our first cold night in the tent we got a late start on exploring the area. First stop was a camping store in town where we both bought touks/watch caps to wear to bed to keep our heads warm. Romantic, eh? Then we drove to Dawson Falls on roads winding through beautiful pasturelands and ending up on the lower part of Mount Taranaki. After a look around the Visitor’s Center we walked down the trail to the base of the falls. The walk was less than ½ hour – just long enough for Tom’s aching back. The falls were pretty, but truthfully we’ve seen many that were more impressive. We spent the evening (New Years Eve) eating pizza with Heather, Kevin and their kids and went to bed (with new watch caps on our heads) around 10pm, long before the New Year arrived.
New Year’s Day dawned with blue skies and sunshine but it’s still blustery and cold. We packed up the tent and camping gear and drove to another holiday park in the town of New Plymouth. We got situated in our campsite and spent the afternoon at the visitor’s center and in one of the local museums. We’ll be in New Plymouth for two nights so we’re planning a tiki tour/picnic tomorrow to see the sights.
